Large crocodilians are kept in either natural or concrete-
lined ponds. For temperature sensitive animals, ponds
are kept warm in the winter months with a water
overflow system. We meet and exceed the regulations
of Florida Fish and Wildlife for sizes of enclosures and
gauges of fence panels.
In addition, fences are buried in the ground to prevent
animals from digging out. For most enclosures,
knockdowns are used as well to prevent animals from
climbing over the fence. Most enclosures are community
exhibits, housing more than one animal.
We monitor animal interactions very closely, particularly
when new individuals are added. If there is any
prolonged conflict, we separate those animals.
The majority of our crocodilians are alligators (Alligator
mississippiensis) of which there are approximately 100.
